Willow Grove, PA is a commercialized community in Philadelphia’s northern suburbs. Located within Upper Dublin Township, Abington Township, and Upper Moreland Township, the area is known for large chain stores, restaurants an shopping.
Established in 1719 after a land grant by William Penn, the area was known as Manor of Moreland. After the first home was built the same year, the farm gradually started to grow into a small rural community. Eventually, more homesteads were partitioned from the manor.
Willow Grove played an important role during the American Revolutionary War as it was a major route for both American and British Armies to advance to Philadelphia. The Red Lion Inn housed wounded soldiers during the Battle of Edge Hill, just southwest of the community. The Inn was tended by Joseph Butler who was later arrested by the British and held prisoner in Philadelphia during the occupation. British troops marched through Willow Grove on the way to the Battle of Brandywine.
The town also played a role in the Underground Railroad. As abolitionist support increased, an increased number of runaway slaves headed towards Philadelphia. It is reported that there were nearly 9,000 runaways in Philadelphia in 1860. Montgomery County’s Old York Road was one of the strongest links to the railroad, because one of the most used routes ran from Philadelphia, through Willow Grove, and to New York. At night, slaves traveled the road seeking refuge in homes of abolitionists, some of which resided in Willow Grove.
Post World War II, the local community became a prime target for suburban real estate developers and the housing boom that followed. Between the opening of the Willow Grove Interchange and the Pennsylvania Turnpike, this town became a retreat for those wanting to get away from Philadelphia, but not leave the comforts of modern amenities.
