Woodbine, NJ is a small borough less than ten minutes from the coast, with a population of just under 2,500 residents. The community was incorporated in 1903 from portions of Dennis Township.
The history of Woodbine is rich in Eastern European culture. The borough was founded when the Baron DeHirsch Fund purchased 5,300 acres of land in Dennis Township to start a settlement for Jewish people from Russia and Poland to escape persecution by the Czarist programs. Within two years, the residents had cleared the forest and built their new town and started planting farmland.
In 1894, the community created the Baron DeHirsch Agricultural College. Despite closing in 1917, the college was considered a model of progressive education and its graduates won numerous awards at state, national, and international levels. The college was the first post-secondary school in the country that specialized in agriculture. Today it serves as the Woodbine Developmental Center, a state-run training center for mentally handicapped men. The center is also the largest employer in Cape May County.
Many of Woodbine’s founding families left for the suburbs after the end of World War II. However, the idea of being a safe haven still exists, as new settlers from South America and the Caribbean arrived looking for a better place to live. The community is now a dynamic, multi-ethnic hub in NJ.
One of the most popular attractions in Woodbine, is the Carol Lynn Resorts Campground. The year-round campground is one of the first condo style sites in South Jersey. The park has a lot to offer its tenants with its miles of trails, a lake and various playgrounds and recreational fields. The campground and park are wonderful, but when you get home, you expect comfort and efficiency. Hutchinson’s expertly better, local contractors can help you with any plumbing or HVAC emergencies.
