Glassboro has had many big changes over the years, reinventing itself and thriving throughout its history. Hutchinson’s Plumbing contractors have been there every step of the way, since 1948, providing solutions to the ever-changing heating and air conditioning needs of the residents of Glassboro. We will continue to grow with them each year. We also provide our expert, local HVAC services to the businesses in the area and to academia.
As the name of the town suggests, this community’s early history was forged on glass manufacturing. Solomon Stranger established the town in 1779 as “Glassworks in the Woods.” The glass factory changed ownership multiple times over the years, most notably in 1842 when the Whitney Brothers purchased the shop and Glassboro became one of the largest communities in Gloucester County. It was very impressive to employ a blacksmith, wheelwright, carpenter, shoemaker, and a mason in the same town.
In 1949, Thomas Whitney built the historic Hollybush Mansion, which is now part of Rowan University. In 1967, the mansion was host to Lyndon Johnson and Soviet Premier Aleksei Kosygin’s Glassboro Summit Conference to ease Cold War tensions.
Hutchinson’s heating and air conditioning specialists are very grateful for that conference. Glassboro is innovative, just like our professional HVAC technicians. All of our local contractors go through an additional one hundred hours of training each year. Our services are second to none and we are knowledgeable in all HVAC brands that are used in this area. Our plumbing expertise is also up to date and historically experienced, with four generations of knowledge to inherit. Hutchinson’s local contractors have a lot in common with Glassboro in that sense. The schools here are fabulous.
Originally named the New Jersey Normal School, the Glassboro University opened in 1923. Now known as Rowan University, after industrialist and university donor Henry Rowan, the distinguished university has been ranked in the Top 100 Public Schools by U.S. News Best Colleges Rankings in 2017 and was also ranked #19 for Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs the same year.
In 2012 the university was granted Research University status and acquired the University of Medicine and Dentistry’s Stratford based School of Osteopathic Medicine. This acquisition allowed Rowan to join Michigan State University as the only two institutions in the U.S. to operate both a DO and an MD medical school. The partnership between the University and Glassboro has proved to be a great asset to the successful development of this community.
Today, Glassboro takes great pride in its craftsmanship and manufacturing. The town is experiencing an increase in hiring, which has led to over 100 companies either starting or expanding within city limits. Hutchinson is expanding too, and we love serving the businesses here as well as the residents.
It is a suburban community that prides itself on its hometown family makeup, yet has an economically viable business district thriving with a unique mix of non-profit, commercial and small businesses. The borough hosts an array of events for locals and travelers alike and with its charming downtown, it is considered an ideal family community.
