Devon, PA was once a part of Easttown, which was named because it was East of Chester, which was then, the county seat of Chester County. It was first settled by Welsh men, not Quakers, but men of the Church of England. In the 1680s three Englishmen made the first official purchase of the land here. The man owning the part that would one day be Devon never set foot in the new world, and died in London, never having developed the land.
In 1734, a blacksmith built a log cabin here, a cabin that stood the test of time and came to be known as the Devon Tea House. It sat on Old Lancaster Road, though it is rumored to have been rebuilt in 1914. Other than that, few dwellings were on this land, until 1881, when a Co-op called Coffin and Altemus bought land adjacent to a proposed Eagle Rail Station, planning to build a large town.
Every detail was planned, and they claimed: “it will not be surpassed in beauty by any similar place along the Pennsylvania Railroad.” They laid out lots of two and a half to five acres each. In 1882, they started to build the famous Devon Inn. It became a summer resort of great charm and attracted new home buyers to the newly developing area. By 1908, every plot was filled and Devon expanded from all sides.
There is a parcel of land in an old map, showing the George H. Earle Jr. estate. When his son was born here in Devon in 1890, no one knew he’d grow up to be the Governor. Later, the Earle estate was purchased by Edith Hutchinson. She named the home Ashwood Hall.
One can’t help but wonder if that is why Hutchinson’s Plumbing and HVAC is so popular in Devon today. Maybe an ancestor had an early grand estate here. We certainly know our family business history, at least since two brothers founded Hutchinson’s Engineering in 1948. We have been growing and perfecting our trade for seventy years, providing local contractors to care for the heating and air conditioning of the good people of Devon
Hutchinson’s heating and air conditioning contractors are called here time and time again for repeat business. Our services are considered ‘expertly better’ and that expertise is demanded by the busy people who live here in Devon
If they need a plumber, they know that a courteous expert will arrive, on time, to an appointment scheduled at their convenience. There is no new technology in use in the local area that Hutchinson isn’t trained on and efficient at. We take pride in making sure every one of our local contractors and plumbers continue their education consistently.
Our local HVAC contractors have four generations of experience with heating and air conditioning, combined with continuing education that each is required to achieve each year. This makes our HVAC services the best in the local area and keeps families returning through generations. When Chester county needs a plumber, they simply call Hutch. We are here for you 24/7.
