Absecon, NJ was founded as a clamming and oystering area. It is also the name of a barrier island at the Atlantic seashore. The island of Absecon includes big cities such as Atlantic City and Margate. In fact, Atlantic City was originally called Absecon Beach, and it was mapped as “Absecum Beach” in 1769.

Today, the City of Absecon boasts a population of over 8,400 people and rising, but the island of Absecon has over 57,000. The name Absecon came from the Native Americans who collected shellfish here long ago. The “original people”, as they are known, are said to have been coming here for six thousand years. The Lenni Lenape people from this part of the local area were called “Unalachtigo” meaning “people who live by the ocean”. The inlet area was called “Absegami” meaning “little water”, and this also doubled for naming the subset of the Unalachtigo people.
The land was noticed by European settlers around 1595 when a man named Thomas Budd bought almost all of Atlantic County for four cents an acre. It wasn’t until 1785 that someone European decided to live on the island of Absecon. His name was Jeremiah Leeds. He called it “Further island”. Leeds had a farm where Columbus Plaza now sits, and it extended to the edge of the AC Expressway.
Eventually a doctor named Pitney decided this area was beneficial to your health and could heal city people of their ailments. He started a resort and that started the popularity of the area. You can still visit the Pitney house, the Absecon Inn and the Historical Society Museum to fill up with all of the historical facts of Absecon.
