Hutchinson’s loves coming to Haddonfield, NJ not only to provide the very best heating and ac services to its 11,600 residents, but to enjoy the rich history here. While our contractors provide the best HVAC and plumbing, we remember where we came from. We too started our local services right here in 1948. Haddonfield was one of the very first settlements of West Jersey by Europeans. The Lenni Lenape Native Americans had already left the area when Francis Collins built the first house here in 1682, but some arrowheads are still being unearthed.
Also unearthed here was “Haddy” the first ever complete dinosaur skeleton from North America, officially called “Hadrosaurus foulkii”. The bones are in the Academy of Natural Sciences now, but a twelve-foot-tall copy stands in the middle of town to honor her. Our local contractors have had a few visits with Haddy.
A man named John Haddon, was this town’s namesake. He bought five hundred acres here, and his daughter crossed the sea from Britain to settle on it in 1701. Unfortunately, her father never followed to live in the mansion she and her husband built for him. Even so, she didn’t stop there, she donated the land for the Friends meeting hall and cemetery and influenced new traders to come to the area.
Soon the town was thriving and a center of commerce by the time she passed in 1682. In 1684 the first volunteer fire company was established here and is running today as the second oldest still existing in the entire united States!
Hutchinson respects the legacy of Haddonfield and we do our HVAC and plumbing with care to keep the charm of this town both authentic and functional. Some buildings require expert care.
One of them is the Indian King Tavern. The decision for New jersey to become a state, and no longer be a colony was made at this very place by the NJ assembly in 1777, and the seal of NJ was also created here. American and British troops both used Haddonfield as camps during the revolution. This Tavern was the first historical purchase made by the state of NJ.
Ironically Haddonfield was deemed a dry town in 1873, and though you can’t stop in for a pint, you can stop into the museum. Haddonfield’s charm and nostalgic feel was officially preserved in 1971 by an historic district ordinance. Yard signs are even replaced by ribbons during advertising and election seasons.
