Wynnewood, PA is a small neighborhood in Lower Merion Township that extends partially into Haverford Township. It is populated with 13,000 residents. In 1870 the Wilson brothers and Company created a train station and regional rail line here for the Pennsylvania railroad. Today it is used by SEPTA but the “Main Line” trains are known for building the Main Line neighborhoods.
Wynnewood was named for Dr.Thomas Wynne in 1691. He was William Penn’s personal doctor. Wynnewood often gets its borders confused with nearby Narberth or Ardmore. Ardmore accepts the mix-ups and the towns play into it, naming the Ardwood Civic Association with both towns. They also share a park. A few places are known to be unique to Wynnewood though.
A five-acre development was planned here in Wynnewood to mimic an old-style English village. Every detail was planned, down to the stonework. The village still stands as a moment in time, with residents preserving the unique authenticity of their homes today. The whole neighborhood was made a Historic district by the Pennsylvania Historical Commission. The planned development wasn’t completed until 1928 but it brings in a charm that is rarely matched. You can find it behind the Lower Merion High School.
Other famous places here are the beautiful St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, which is a treat to pass by, the prestigious Palmer Theological Seminary and the famous Friends’ Central School. On a Sunday the local church bells ring across the hillside here and the sounds match the beauty.
The Lankenau Hospital is also a salute to great older buildings. Wanmaker opened his first suburban department store in Wynnewood. This neighborhood also offers some of the best schools in the country to its students, including diverse private choices.
