Woodstown is a historical borough in Salem County established on July 26, 1882, from portions of Pilesgrove Township. This community is one of New Jersey’s twenty-one “doughnut towns”, an independent municipality completely surrounded by another. This neighborhood serves as the commercial core of the paired communities, while the surrounding Pilesgrove is primarily agricultural.
One of the architectural cornerstones of the borough is the First National Bank of Woodstown. The Romanesque Revival Building was chartered in 1864 and completed in 1892. Detailed with Perth Amboy Pompeiian brick and red sandstone, the striking structure was designed by Philadelphia architect Albert W. Dilks. The bank is two and a half stories tall and features an open arched tower that adds an additional seventy feet rise above the entrance. The interior continues with the Romanesque design with an arched fireplace and intricately decorated vault door. Last serving as law offices from 2007-2013, the building was auctioned off to a group of investors who have been unsuccessful in trying to resell it. It will be a treasure for the new owners when they find it.
Locals consider Woodstown to be a hidden gem in southern New Jersey. They enjoy close proximity to cities such as Wilmington, Philadelphia, and Atlantic City, which allow many residents to easily commute for work. The main thoroughfare is filled with cozy restaurants, yoga and dance studios, and other entertainment options. Families with children are serviced by the Woodstown Pilesgrove Regional School District. Woodstown High is ranked in the top third of NJ schools and their beloved Wolverines compete as a member of the Tri-County Conference. The school offers a variety of extracurricular activities in athletics and the arts.
