Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning Services in Upper Darby, PA
Upper Darby Township is a bustling suburb in Delaware County. Famed for their celebration of arts and culture, Upper Darby is one of Pennsylvania’s most diverse communities. Located just forty minutes west of Center City Philadelphia, this thriving community makes for a great escape from the city without sacrificing any of the amenities a big city offers.
The first inhabitants in the region were the Lenni Lenape Native American People, who’d occupied this land for thousands of years. However, by 1650 their numbers had dwindled due to a war with the Susquehannock tribe to the west. That combined with an outbreak of smallpox and measles made them a non-threat to European settlers.
1653 brought the first permanent European settlers with a group from New Sweden. They called the place New Sweden, but it was soon taken over by the Dutch in 1655 and then again by the English in 1664. The land remained under English control until it was included in the land grant to William Penn in 1681. The next year, the area became part of Darby Township. Darby Township was originally in Chester County, until 1789 when the eastern section of the county was sectioned off to form Delaware County. The division of Darby into Upper and Lower happened in 1736. It was a long winding road to its current name, but it was always a great place to be.
Because of the town’s Quaker background, Upper Darby was active in the antislavery movement. Prior to 1830, there was at least one abolition society which sent a committee of twelve prominent citizens to the 1830 meeting of The Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society in Philadelphia. There were also many homes in the area that were stops on the Underground Railroad, one of which belonged to abolitionist Thomas Pennock, which is now home to the township’s children’s library.
Arts and culture have always been important to the Upper Darby community. The town is home to the iconic Tower Theater, a former movie and vaudeville theater that opened in 1927. The theater closed briefly in the 1970s a reopened as a world-renowned concert venue hosting such names as Bruce Springsteen and David Bowie. Upper Darby was lovingly referred to as “Downtown” for the shopping district that DELCO residents flocked to through the mid to late twentieth century. Founded in 1976, Upper Darby Summer Stage is one of the nation’s oldest youth theater programs. Every summer over 750 students from the Delaware Valley participates in the Summer Stage programs.
With the town’s focus on the local arts, it’s no wonder that it is the birthplace to several entertainers and has made its way into pop culture. Icons like Dick Clark, Jim Croce, Tina Fey, and Ed McMahon have all called Upper Darby home. The town also served as the backdrop to David O. Russel’s Academy Award Winning Silver Linings Playbook.
