Upper Chichester Township is a growing suburban community with a population of 16,738. The township has an ideal location placing it just thirty minutes south of Center City Philadelphia and less than twenty minutes north of Wilmington, Delaware. Hutchinson’s plumbing and HVAC contractors enjoy being a part of the growth here, providing comfort to the residents since 1948.
The first people here were the Lenni Lenape Native Americans, “the original people”, who traced back thousands of years. They were responsible for building several semi-permanent villages along Naaman’s and Marcus Hook creeks that were connected to the fishing and hunting opportunities found by Europeans in the area.
When the Swedes arrived in 1643 and the Dutch in 1654, both nations primary interest in the area was trading with the Lenape tribe. 1681 brought the first European settlers that made a home here, under the land grant from King Charles II to William Penn. These settlers were English and Welshmen and most of them were Quakers. Among that early townsfolk was Walter Martin, the founder of St. Martin’s Church in the late 17th century. Roads began being laid in Chi Chester as early as 1688.
The early 1700s brought the division of Chichester into Upper and Lower Chichester to facilitate public business. In 1753 there was an effort to make it official, but it was met with opposition from community leaders and landowners of Lower Chichester because they believed the township did not need separating. They believed the money that would be spent surveying the land for the division would be best spent improving roads and providing for the poor in their communities. This motion drug along for the next six years, until 1759 when a petition was presented that officially separate the town.
Today the town is seeing an uptick in population and with it there are more and more local shops opening. The town is serviced by the Chichester School District which offers an array of advanced placement courses in core classes as well as in arts and languages. Hutchinson’s plumbing and HVAC services are used by businesses and residents alike.
