Strathmere, NJ is small water front community located within Upper Township. It is located on Ludlam Island and less than one square mile in size. Strathmere is a narrow strip of bay and ocean front land connecting Sea Isle City to Ocean City.
Lundlam Islands early known inhabitants were the Lenape Native American tribe, who used the island during the summer to harvest fish and crustaceans. While the exact date is still unknown, historians have traced the original ownership of the island to John and Jennie Burk. In approximately 1881, the island was deeded to Matilda Landis, who along with her attorney Charles Landis, helped develop the area.
In the 1920’s, a project called “Brighton Shores” was created to begin Strathmere. Along with proposed housing division, they planted 500 trees as part of the project’s planning. Some of those trees still remain.
The Deauville Inn is an iconic building on the shore of Strathmere. The Inn was originally built in 1881 by James P. Carothers, who immigrated to the United States in 1862. During the 1920’s and 30’s, The Deauville Inn was a popular institution, even during prohibition. At that time, one of the rooms was used for a gambling casino and it was a popular venue for famous entertainers like Eddie Cantor and Sophie Tucker. Today the Inn is a waterfront restaurant and sports bar. It is always packed with parched customer’s from Strathmere and the surrounding dry towns.
