South Dennis, NJ has its own zip code, but it is one of the eight villages of Dennis Township, which take pride in having no boundaries. South Dennis has a rich history and is always changing with the times. Hutchinson’s plumbing and HVAC services are also changing with the times.
We started out as an engineering company in 1948, doing whatever jobs that needed to be done. We evolved into an award-winning heating and air conditioning company.
Our local contractors get the best training, in all of the new and emerging HVAC technology, prior to servicing any of our customers. They do this as well as getting over one hundred hours of additional training for each year they work with us. Hutchinson has seen many changes through the years, and we understand the resilience of the residents of South Dennis.
South Dennis is home to the Union Cemetery, a famous resting place for revolutionary war hero’s. Here you can find a monument honoring war soldier John Grace (1756-1835) who is buried here. A special story about this particular grave marker, is that it was purchased by local schoolchildren, who raised money for eight years. When they unveiled the monument on 1904 over 2,500 people came to watch.
The monument reads: TO THE MEMORY OF JOHN GRACE A SOIDIER OF THE REVOLUTION FROM 1777 TO 1783, WHOM GENERAL WASHINGTON THUS COMMENDED TO GENERAL GATES “HE IS MY TRUSTED SCOUT WHOM BRITISH GOLD COULD NOT BUY.” Many other heroes are also commemorated here.
South Dennis started out as a quaint lumber town. Harvesting cedar wood, and farming were its mainstays. Eventually the timber was cleared, and the locals realized that there were old forests of cedar under the swamps and marshes. They “raised” or “mined” the ancient timber from the water and it was used to make shingles.
They soon made grist mills in the water by clearing areas and creating dams. They constructed gates, so they could bring ships into the low waters using the flow of the tides and the dammed water. They dredged ditches and made a shipping area for the passage of boats and rafts.
Eventually this became a tide mill, generating power by 1793. This water powered industry made way for a ship building yard. More than fifty large vessels were built over many years and towed to big cities to be fitted with sails. They built a causeway with a covered bridge over the water, and a hub of transportation and shipbuilding was born.
The mill was important to the community as well, and the new water ways helped create conditions for salt hay crops. After they depleted the cedar in the area they imported wood for the ship building, which flourished until the railroads came. Their wooded ships were soon replaced by metal ships from the city.
By the 1920’s the bridge was replaced and enlarged for a fourth time. All of the shipyards were gone, and the abandoned wharves were used by local fisherman. You can find a log of the ships built here, as well as their sea captains in Dennisville, and many small roads are named after the same captains & shipbuilding families. Dennis creek landing is not in use, and the community has kept it’s ever changing pace with today’s industries.
