Originally created as the junction of the branches of the New York division of the Pennsylvania Railroad, the Rocky Hill Railroad, and the Jamesburg and Freehold Railroads, Monmouth Junction is now considered an unincorporated community of South Brunswick.
Also located in Monmouth Junction is the Red Maple Farm, listed on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places and the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 as the Gulick House. It was built in 1740 by Joachim Gulick, whose family ran a stage line, and was known historically as a stop on the Underground Railroad.
