Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning Services in Manchester, NJ
Manchester is a middle-class community nestled in the New Jersey Pinelands, just 30 minutes from the popular shore destination, Seaside Heights. Incorporated on April 6, 1865, the town’s population continues to slowly grow and was estimated to be nearly 46,000 in 2010. Manchester was named by its founder, William Torrey, after the British city bearing the same name.
Torrey moved to what is now present-day Lakehurst Borough after he and his wife, Adelaide, received 640 acres in 1841. Working as a real estate broker and developer, Torrey spent the next two years selling properties he owned in Manchester Village. It was his goal to turn the growing community into an important rail and industrial center. His dream was realized in 1863 when the railroad was opened as part of the Raritan and Delaware Bay Railroad. This allowed for connections to other lines that led to the Jersey Shore and Philadelphia.
Manchester, NJ may sound familiar to many as it is the home to the Lakehurst Naval Air Station, the site of the Hindenburg disaster on May 6, 1937. On that day, the German passenger airship, LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire as it attempted to dock with its mooring mast at the air station. The disaster was heavily covered for its day, becoming the subject of newsreel coverage and radio eyewitness reports. The catastrophe claimed the lives of thirty-five people on board and one ground worker. Thirteen passengers and twenty-two crewmen died of the ninety-seven on board at the time.
Today the base is known as Lakehurst Maxfield Field and is the naval component of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, a United States Air Force managed joint base. It is the home of the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division Lakehurst, although the airfield supports flying and non-flying units as well.
Families with school-aged children are served by Manchester Township District, which also is part of a sending & receiving relationship with Lakehurst Borough, meaning their students also attend the district. Manchester Township High School, home of the Hawks, competes in the Shore Conference, an athletic conference made up of high schools along the NJ shore area. Their school is no stranger to championship teams, as the boys’ track and bowling, along with the girls’ bowling team have each won state championships.
