Lafayette Hill, PA is an unincorporated suburb that is primarily in Whitemarsh Township. Located next to Philadelphia’s Chestnut Hill neighborhood, the community sits about fourteen miles from the city’s center. Named for the French General Marquis de Lafayette, who stayed in the area during the American Revolution, this beautiful community offers to affluent families beautiful homes and top-rated schools.
Like much of the area, the original inhabitants were members of the Leni Lenape People, who lived peacefully with early English and Welsh Quaker settlers. Settlements began in 1683, one year after Charles II of England granted the land to William Penn. Originally this place was named Marble Hill for the marble quarries in the area along Germantown Pike. The community was renamed to its current moniker in 1883.
During the American Revolution, Lafayette Hill’s St. Peter’s Lutheran Church was used by both American and British soldiers as a stable and battery. In 1778, General Lafayette established the church as an outpost to protect Valley Forge from British troops. The church was left in ruins after the war and was rebuilt in 1809. A fire took the church in 1899 and was rebuilt in 1901.
Today, Lafayette Hill is a safe and picturesque community with an abundance of parks, country clubs and golf courses. There is a prominent Jewish population whose roots go back to the mid-twentieth century. The community is also home to one of the oldest fire departments, the Barren Hill Volunteer Fire Company which was established in 1915. Families with children are part of the Colonial School District, located in Plymouth Meeting, it is one of the premier districts in the state.
