Like much of the region, the area is rich with history that originates with the Lenni-Lenape people being the first inhabitants, legend says they lived here for thousands of years. In 1677, John Cook purchased 1,111 acres from the tribe and constructed a home with a mill on his property. In October of 1776, he was promoted to the title of Brigadier General and later led the First New Jersey Regiment during the Revolutionary War.
Gibbstown borders the Greenwich Lake Park, which attracts nature lovers from around the area. The park offers a variety of aquatic activities such as boating, kayaking, and year-round fishing. The 40-acre lake is stocked with trout twice a season, by the NJ Department of Fish and Game.
