Carneys Point, or “the Jewel of Salem County”, is a seventeen square mile township in the western portion of the county. Just twenty minutes from Wilmington, Delaware and forty minutes to Philadelphia, this middle-class community is most recognized for the Delaware Memorial Bridge over the Delaware River. The area was settled in 1727 by Irish immigrants, including Thomas Carney, whom the town would eventually be named after.
It was incorporated by an Act of the New Jersey Legislation on February 21, 1978, and was comprised from portions of Oldmans Township and Penns Grove borough. The township was renamed on November 10, 1976, after voters approved a referendum held eight days earlier.
The most iconic visual in Carneys Point’s skyline is the Delaware Memorial Bridge that connects the town to New Castle, Delaware. That giant, twin suspension bridge is divided into eastbound and westbound sections with the longest being over ten thousand feet long.
It was designed by the firm, HNTB, with help from an engineer named Othmar Ammann. His other designs include Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and the Walt Whitman Bridge. It is the southern-most fixed vehicular crossing of the Delaware River and is dedicated to those from New Jersey and Delaware that lost their lives in World War II, the Korean War, The Vietnam War, and the Persian Gulf War. The eastbound lanes opened on August 16, 1951, and westbound in 1968 and it supports approximately ninety thousand cars and truck every day.
Carneys Point does have some notable past residents. Johnny Gaudreau, who currently plays left wing for the Calgary Flames, grew up in town and played little league baseball nearby. Also, popular action star, Bruce Willis moved to Carneys Point as a child and graduated high school in the district. Hutchinson’s Plumbing and HVAC services don’t come to Carneys Point to see the stars, but if Bruce ever calls for our services, we will be thrilled to help him with his plumbing. We might have done so years ago without knowing it!
