Alloway Township is an unincorporated community along the eastern border of Salem County, New Jersey. Less than a forty-minute drive from Wilmington, Delaware, this pristine town has a population of 3,467. Known for their beautiful landscape, Alloway is a perfect spot to enjoy the outdoors.
Originally home to the Lenni Lenape tribe, Alloway gets its name from a local Native American, Chief Allowas. The Lenape people, known as the “Delawares” to European settlers, were part of the Algonquin tribe. They used the land of the around the Delaware River for hunting and fishing for hundreds of years.
Although currently unincorporated, Alloway once was. Upper Alloways Creek Township was formally incorporated by Royal charter on June 17, 1767, from portions of what was once Alloways Creek Township. Portions of Quinton Township were formed from parts of Alloways Creek in 1873. On February 21, 1884, the town’s name was officially changed to Alloway.
