In 1966, the Federal government realized the beauty and importance of this area and issued a grant. The purpose was to extend the Center City district to the North of City Hall and up Cecil B. Moore Avenue. They did that and more, Brewreytown has trendy hotspots, and the Temple University area is a place to be proud of. The old “Badlands” are even being gentrified.
Northern Liberties was given its name in colonial times because the city was giving away land grants to develop the northern area, and the grants were considered “Liberties”. It was popular then and was incorporated in 1803 as a town, which was later absorbed by Philadelphia. Today artist’s exhibits, fancy lofts made from old brewery’s and trending restaurants mark the village.
The art museum area is also ripe with activities and bustle of in-demand real estate and things to do. The museum itself is a marvel, but you can also visit several other museums close by, or tour the Eastern State Penitentiary. You can grab a drink or a bite at the cute new places opened near the Ben Franklin Bridge, or check out the Edgar Allan Poe Museum on Spring Garden Street.
Nearby Fishtown is considered the hottest place to live, and as featured in Forbes Magazine as “America’s Hottest New Neighborhood”. It is fabulous, with an influx of artists and entrepreneurs, things are fun and getting better every day. The neighborhood isn’t very new though, it was where William Penn signed a treaty with the Turtle Clan of the Lenni Lenape people.
You can visit Penn Treaty park today. Fishtown also got its name from the smell of fish. The town was once piled with the tools of the fishing industry, and with fish. Rumors were spread about Charles Dickens giving it the Fishtown name, but it was mapped prior to his visit.
Port Richmond is another famous section here, it is said that a pirate first discovered the place in 1700. Port Richmond is known for its Polish American community. Many of the sections of Philadelphia are known for the heritage of its settlers, and Port Richmond is one of them. This is a great place to get delicious Polish food and a beer. It is also becoming a hot spot for new families, because of its terrific safety rating.
