Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning Services in Wayne, PA

Wayne is a pristine community primarily located in Radnor Township, Delaware County. However, parts of Wayne can be found in Tredyffrin Township in Chester County and Upper Merion Township in Montgomery County. Located on the Main Line, it is part of a series of affluent Philadelphia suburbs, some of the wealthiest in the nation.

Formerly named “Louella”, the area was once home to the Lenni Lenape People. The first European settlers arrived in the 1600s, they were a group of forty Quakers from Radnorshire, Wales seeking religious freedom. After purchasing a five-thousand-acre section from William Penn, the township was officially founded in 1861. Parcels of land were then sold at the price of one British pound per fifty acres.

Lancaster Pike, America’s first toll road, was created in 1795 and began running through the area. By mid-1800’s the portion of the Columbia Railroad between Philadelphia and Harrisburg, known as the Main Line, was completed. This allowed almost exclusively, only wealthy bankers to purchase property in the area. One such banker, James Henry Askin, purchased three hundred acres and built a Victorian home named “Louella”, in honor of his daughters Louisa and Ella.

Askin was also responsible for building the Wayne Presbyterian Church, The Opera House, and numerous mansions along Bloomingdale Avenue. In 1880, Askin sold his land to Anthony J. Drexel and George W. Childs who began the early stages of developing out Louella as a planned community and eventually changed its name to Wayne after General Anthony Wayne.

The area continued to thrive thanks to easy access from Philadelphia. Places like the Bellevue Hotel welcomed wealthy summer visitors who wanted options outside of the Jersey Shore for vacations. The area also became a favorite country getaway from the bustle of the city, with mansions and large estates being built along the countryside.

Today, Wayne is considered one of the best places to live and start a business in Pennsylvania. Both Kenexa and SunGard are headquartered in Wayne and the downtown area is one of the most sought after to start a small business. Residents and visitors can take advantage of several points of interest like the Chanticleer Botanical Garden, the farmer’s market, and East Village Shops. Families with school children attend the Radnor Township School District with Radnor High School, one of the top three high schools in the state of Pennsylvania.
