Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning Services in Prospect Park, PA

Prospect Park is a small borough located in southeastern Delaware County. Less than a square mile in size, the community is roughly thirty minutes from both downtown Philadelphia and Wilmington, Delaware. Like much of the region, the land was originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape People who used to land to fish and hunt.

After William Penn was granted land by King Charles II in 1681, several property disputes began to erupt. The Swedes were the first to settle in the region in 1643 and they were shortly followed by the Dutch in 1665. They were well settled when things began to change. When the English began to infringe on the property of the Swedes and Dutch, a disruption began which led to a number of land patents being issued to clear matters up. Much land had also been “purchased” from the native people confusing things more.

In 1874, a local realtor by the name of John Cochran of Chester purchased one hundred three acres of the Joshua Pearson estate. Having established Norwood just a year prior, Cochran was ready for another endeavor, so he divided the land into five hundred sixty-five lots and began selling the properties as part of the Prospect Hill development.

By 1877, Cochran’s venture had not turned out well, and he let his mortgage lapse on his share of the development. It was sold to Charles Horne of Tinicum Township. By 1893 the town had become developed just enough to incorporate, the papers were filed, and the borough was granted its charter on May 7, 1894.

Prospect Park is home to the historic Morton Homestead in Morton Homestead State Park. The homestead was founded in 1654 by Morton Mortonson, a Finnish immigrant when the area was part of the New Sweden Colony. The structure is considered to be one of the oldest in PA with parts being built in 1698. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.
