Settled in 1812, Hammonton was named for John Hammond Coffin, a son of one of the community’s earliest settlers. Due to its location in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey, the area has sandy soil ideal for growing blueberries, leading to Hammonton being touted as the “Blueberry Capital of the World”. The area is also one of 56 South Jersey municipalities included within the New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve, established by Congress in 1978 as the nation’s first national reserve.
