Furlong is an unincorporated community that is surrounded by Buckingham and Doylestown Township. This upper-middle-class area is almost entirely residential and sits approximately thirty-five miles north of Philadelphia. Like much of the region, the land was originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape. As for the European settlers, Doylestown was first owned by the Free Society of Traders, a company of merchants, landowners, and personal associates of William Penn.
Most of this time period’s society were Quaker immigrants from London and Dublin. They later sold the land as part of a two-thousand-acre tract to Jerimiah Langhorne in 1724.
In the early 1730s, Edward Doyle and his sons, including William, lived in the area. In 1745, William erected a tavern so that travelers would have a place to rest on their journeys to Trenton, Philadelphia, and New York.
Buckingham Township around Furlong originated much of the same way, with its roots deeply tied to the Lenape Indians. The English and Welsh Quakers began to arrive in the early 1700s at Penn’s invitation, however, many Germans settled into the area as well.
Agriculture has always been the primary industry within Buckingham and is still a farming community today. That said, in the mid-1970s there was a considerable shift from the rural landscape to suburban.
Residents of Furlong take great pride in the two school districts that cover their region, Central Bucks County School District and Council Rock School District. Both schools have elite educational programs offering an array of extracurricular activities. Central Bucks County District has been listed as a Top Performing District by Standard and Poors and was given the “Ambassador” award by the Chamber of Commerce. Central Bucks was ranked 4th out of five hundred schools by the Pittsburgh Business Times which ranked PA school districted based on academic achievement.
