Anthony Ludlam founded Dennisville in 1726. Ludlam’s grandfather was an immigrant to the United States from Yorkshire, England in approximately 1640. Anthony’s father Joseph also settled land in Cape May County when he purchased property at Ludlam’s Run and Ludlam’s Beach. The first post office was established in 1802 when Jeremiah Johnson, a tavern owner, became the local postmaster.
The small community at that time was primarily comprised of farmers and shingle miners. The shingles were made from the cedar harvested in the swampy areas of the community. It was not until 1854 that the name Dennisville was assigned.
Dennisville is part of the Pine Barrens, and a New Jersey Scenic Byway. The one million-acre Pinelands is the largest body of forested space on the Mid-Atlantic seaboard between Richmond, VA and Boston, MA. This national reserve occupies 22% of NJ land area and is a natural and cultural environment that is unique to the world and deemed a global biosphere.
