Cream Ridge, NJ is a part of Upper Freehold Township. The township was chartered in 1731, to be set apart for Freehold Township. In 1798 the township was formally incorporated. There are over six thousand acres here, and all have been previously used as farmland.
The ground here is particularly rich in special soil, called sandy loam. Crops excel in this earth, and that attracted incoming farmers who already had acquired wealth. These rich farmers were called “gentleman farmers”.
They did not tend to their lands but rented them to “tenants” who worked the land for them. All profits were divided, and the rent was due, sometimes leaving tenants indebted for the next crop. Some tenants did very well and were able to purchase their own land. The gentleman never had to dirty their hands and the town worked well.
During the Great Depression, the gentleman sold most of their land, and individual farms were created. Farms were further split during World War II. This land and its crops are considered so special that there is a farmland preservation program was put in place to protect its users from development. There are also many horse farms and recreational lands included in the land protective laws. Golf courses and parks also dot the landscape in this part of Monmouth County.
