Aston Township is a small, residential suburb approximately thirty minutes south of Center City Philadelphia. With a population just under 17,000, it has come a long way from its humble beginnings over three hundred years ago. This community was incorporated in 1686, making it one of the first townships in PA.
Aston was settled just six years prior to incorporation, in 1682. At that time, the town was known as Northerly, but Edward Carter, the township constable, changed the name to Aston in honor of his old home in Oxfordshire, England. Northerly Township was a planned community.
The Seven Stars Hotel, located at Pennell and Concord Roads, was the first licensed house in Aston. Built in 1738, the hotel became a stagecoach stop and it was the only voting place in town for many years. The Inn also served as overnight quarters for British General Cornwallis on September 13, 1777, just two days after the Battle of Brandywine.
During the early 19th century, many mills began to spring up along Chester Creek, near the Concord Township line. On August 5, 1843, the flood of the century occurred, delivering serious damage to the mills, completely destroying some as well as taking out the dams and races that the remaining mills depended on for power. It was a long recovery but the town persevered.
Today, Aston is a community-driven township that offers residents an assortment of programs and events like their annual Easter Egg Hunt, July 4th Fireworks display and festivals throughout the year. Families living in town take advantage of good public schools, reasonable housing prices, and lower crime rates, all while being just minutes from the historical and cultural offerings of Philadelphia.
