This borough, has an unusual name. The story behind it comes to mind when we get a call for an HVAC installation or an emergency requiring one of our skilled plumbers. Mount Ephraim was named after Mr. Albertson, who like many of the residents here, is remembered as a great guy.

In the year 1800, a stage coach used to ride between the NJ coastline and Camden. Along their route they came by an Inn called The Old Tavern. The property offered a nice stable to rest or trade horses, and a shed for your carriage in harsh weather, in addition to the riders accommodations in the public house. Completed by a drink and meal at the tavern, it became a very popular stop.

The house was built by Ephraim Alberton. He made such an impression on his patrons, the area became known as Ephraim’s, and eventually Mount Ephraim. In 1855, a meeting held at the house, created Center township and soon Mount Ephraim’s own post office followed. In 1926 it became an official borough, still boasting the first name of a special barkeep.

Today you can see our bright vans driving past the original spot of Albertson’s tavern at the cross roads of the Black Horse Pike and Kings Highway.

Ephraim is still known as the “Village at the Crossroads” and continues to thrive as a close-knit South Jersey community.
