At that time, John and Marty Hight purchased approximately three thousand acres from the British Crown. On the North side of the Rocky Brook Indian Trail, the family erected a log cabin, blacksmith’s shop, tavern, and a mill. 

While not much is known about the history of the Hight family, historians agree that the town began to flourish in the 19th century. It became a popular NJ stop along the first regularly scheduled passenger train from New York to Philadelphia. This allowed the town to become a hub in agriculture trade and commerce.

The borough was established in 1853 from parts of East Windsor Township and it became fully independent circa 1894. The Stockton Street Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and it is quite beautiful. It is comprised of 56 residences that date from the pre-Civil War era to the turn of the 20th century.
