EXPERTLY BETTER TIPS FOR CHOOSING THE BEST SYSTEM FOR YOUR HOME
Many homeowners are getting shortchanged on heating system purchases. Research shows that 9 out of every 10 new systems experienced energy-wasting mistakes due to errors or oversights by the installing contractor.
The EPA states: “…newly installed heating and cooling systems that are undersized or oversized, improperly charged, or connected to a poorly designed and installed duct system will not deliver the rated efficiency.” There is a big difference between a system that puts out hot or cold air and one that performs at the efficiency, comfort, and safety levels intended by the equipment manufacturers.
Make sure your new equipment is the right size: When it comes to heating and air conditioning equipment, bigger is NOT better. Many contractors will sell you a bigger unit than you need. It costs you more to buy the unit, and it can cost a lot more to operate and service it. Even worse, an oversized system actually results in a less comfortable home. A recent Consumer Reports article stated, “Beware of being sold an oversized unit. An oversized unit can cycle on and off more frequently, causing noticeable temperature swings and put more wear on the equipment.”
What’s the difference between a system with ducts or without ducts?
Ducts are pipes that carry air to and from your furnace or air handler. There is a network of them that makes up your ductwork. If you already have ducts in place, a duct system would probably be the best option. Newer homes have modern duct systems that are energy efficient and offer zone controlling enabling you to set different temperatures in different areas of your home. If you have an older home, have your ducts checked to ensure there aren’t any hidden problems that will degrade a new systems performance.
Ductless systems have become a very popular alternative especially for homes heated by a hot water system. As you may have guessed, this option enables you to heat or cool your home without ducts. These systems blend nicely into the décor of most homes because they can be mounted on the wall. There are a variety of wall mount, floor mount, and ceiling mount units to choose from. Prices can vary depending upon the kind of unit you require. Many manufacturers also offer solutions that can heat or cool as many as five rooms independently. There are a host of options available; it just depends upon your needs and your preference for wall, floor, or ceiling units.
