Tips from the experts:

When temperatures are on the rise, your AC unit goes into overdrive to cool your entire house. If it seems your air conditioner is having trouble keeping up, check to see if there is something affecting your system’s ability to do its job:

  • Are any vents obstructed? If furniture is placed over or near your air conditioning vents, move it away so that air can circulate freely.
  • Check your air filter. Dirty air filters will block airflow and can even cause the inside of your unit to freeze. If you can’t remember the last time you changed your air filter, you should do so immediately!
  • Are blinds and shades closed? Almost 30% of unwanted heat comes through windows, so it is wise to close as many blinds and shades as possible to block sunlight from heating your home.
  • Check your circuit breaker. Sometimes an air conditioning unit can trip a home’s circuit breaker. Check to see if a lever is in the off position.
  • Do you use large appliances during the day? Appliances generate heat. Try doing laundry or running the dishwasher in the morning or in the evening when temperatures are cooler.

If you have checked these things and your home is still not being cooled properly, it’s time to have a Hutchinson professional technician check your air conditioning unit.

Is your air conditioning unit 12 years old or older?

Heating, cooling, and hot water can be as much as 75% of your annual utility bill. That’s not pocket change! If your central air conditioning unit is 12 years old or more, replacing it with an ENERGY STAR qualified model could cut your cooling costs by as much as 30 percent. As an HPwES participating contractor, Hutchinson is equipped with specialized training and diagnostic tools to determine how you home is performing. Schedule a no obligation evaluation of your current system and we’ll provide you with all of your options!

The benefits of air conditioning.

In addition to keeping your home cool, air conditioners help clean the air in your home. Most units have filters that catch dust, pollen, mold spores, and other allergens as well as smoke and everyday dirt found in the air. Most air conditioners also function as dehumidifiers by taking excess water from the air and using it to help cool the unit before getting rid of the water through a hose to the outside.

How air conditioners work.

Do you think air conditioners lower the temperature in your home by pumping cool air in? Actually, the warm air from your home is being removed and cycled back in as cooler air. This cycle continues until your thermostat reaches the desired temperature. An air conditioner is basically a refrigerator without the insulated box. It uses the evaporation of a refrigerant, like Freon, to provide cooling. The evaporation process is the same in a refrigerator as it is in an air conditioner.

Central air conditioning: Split-system unit versus a packaged unit.

A split-system air conditioner consists of an outdoor metal cabinet that contains the condenser and compressor, and an indoor cabinet that contains the evaporator. Split-system central air conditioners are more energy efficient. A packaged central air conditioner contains the evaporator, condenser, and compressor in one cabinet. This is usually placed on a roof of a small commercial building or on a concrete slab next to the house and typically has a lower SEER rating, indicating that it is less energy efficient.

Cooling options

Do you have a room that is a “hot” spot or “cool” spot? These are rooms you can’t seem to warm or cool from season to season. If you do, you may want to consider a ductless cooling system. These solutions allow you to claim back those areas as livable spaces; and the versatility of these systems is virtually unlimited. Mitsubishi is an industry leader in this type of air conditioning. Let the experts at Hutchinson explain all of the available options.
