Villanova, PA is a highly affluent community that falls into both Lower Merion Township in Montgomery County and Radnor Township in Delaware County. Villanova is a picture-perfect community of beautifully landscaped lawns leading up to multi-million dollar homes. Located in the center of the Philadelphia Main Line, it is served by the SEPTA Paoli/Thorndale Line regional rail train and Norristown High Speed Line.
The area was originally settled by Welsh Quakers in the late 17th century who were granted land from Pennsylvania founder, William Penn. The area became popular with the creation of the Pennsylvania railroad’s “Main Line”. Every stop became a fabulous town.
The crown jewel of this community is Villanova University, from which the town gets its name. Founded in 1842 by the Order of Saint Augustine, the university’s roots can be traced back to Old Saint Augustine’s Church in Philadelphia in 1796. The stunning university now sits on 254 acres and features the St. Thomas of Villanova Church, a Gothic Revival style church built in 1943. The university was an all-male campus until 1918 when it began educating nuns to teach in parochial schools. The first laywoman to receive her degree was in 1938, but it was not until 1953 that women began attending the school permanently.
Villanova University ranks as the 46th best university in the nation according to U.S. News & World Report in 2018. The university also ranks highly for their MBA programs and law school. Even though Villanova is renowned for their academic achievements, most may know them by their athletic program.
The Villanova Wildcats are a member of the NCAA Division I level, competing in the Big East Conference. Their men’s basketball program has won three national titles, the most recent being in 2018. The entire Philadelphia area routes for Nova when the game is on!
