King of Prussia is best known for the nation’s largest mall, but this shopping mecca has something to offer for everyone. From its rich history to the casino lights, the community has become a premier stop for shoppers and tourists alike. It is also a premium stop for Hutchinson’s local plumbers and HVAC contractors. We take care of this town’s heating and air conditioning needs.

The town’s name comes from the King of Prussia Inn, a tavern that opened in 1769. The converted farmhouse was originally built in 1719 by the Welsh Quakers that inhabited the area seeking religious freedom. The Inn was named to honor King Frederick II of Prussia, a monarch who opposed Britain’s imperial aspirations. The business prospered from sitting exactly one day’s travel, by horse, from Philadelphia and was boosted by the arrival of railroads. General George Washington made his first visit here on Thanksgiving Day in 1777.

Highway construction in the mid-twentieth century expanded the commercial development of King of Prussia. With the construction of the Pennsylvania Turnpike and the Schuylkill Expressway in the 1950’s the town began attracting large corporations like Western Electric and Cabot. By 1960, the area that was known for being Washington’s winter refuge was now becoming a major urban hub of development.

The King of Prussia Mall was originally built in 1963 and focused on mid-market retailers to attract blue collar workers. The mall gradually made a shift towards luxury goods as the surrounding area began offering higher paying jobs, adding stores like Neiman Marcus and Tiffany’s. The mall’s expansion continued through the remainder of the twentieth century when developers added nearly a million square feet to make it the second largest shopping center, only behind the Mall of America in Minnesota. After the Simon Property purchased the mall and added additional space throughout the past decade, the center officially became the largest mall in America. Now checking in at three million square feet, the mall hosts twenty-six million visitors a year.

Other area attractions include the Valley Forge Casino Resort, opening in 2012. The casino has two hotels, six hundred slot machines, fifty game tables and a variety of dining and nightlife options. The town also has a large memorial to the King of Prussia Volunteer Fire Company’s firefighters who lost their lives assisting in the 9/11 attacks. The memorial, consisting of a gazebo and monument, features two steel beams from the World Trade Center that were recovered from Ground Zero.

Hutchinson’s local contractors have the utmost respect for those firefighters and for all of the residents of King of Prussia. We also enjoy getting a little shopping in after repairing someone’s heating and air conditioning. This town has everything, shopping and nightlife, history and heart. It also has the best plumbers and HVAC professional services available, all from Hutchinson contractors.
