Winslow Township is home to part of the Pine Barrens National Reserve, and it is our nation’s very first national reserve. You can visit the Winslow Wildlife area on Piney Hollow Road, where you can glimpse white tailed deer and hear screech owls, or you can take a hike to the Blue Hole, an old water hole that had a legend of being bottomless though it is only twelve feet deep. The spring no longer flows, but the Jersey Devil is said to be there most nights.

Winslow Junction is a famous train track crossroads centered between Atlantic City and Philadelphia. Here merged the Philadelphia-Atlantic City Railroad of 1877, The Vineland Railway Company of 1871, and the Camden-Atlantic Railroads. This was contested to be the busiest junction in the world at its peak. The station helped grow the town’s population from 1540 in the year 1845 when it was founded, to what it is today. At least it helped until 1983 when the junction closed for good. Today it is a spooky train graveyard, but once thousands of people traveled through here daily.
In 1831 a man named William Coffin started the Winslow glassworks here in 1831. His son Edward’s middle name was Winslow, and he decided to name the village after him. The glassworks employed many people over many years and shaped the township. They also held a grist mill and a saw mill here. There was also a tannery nearby which came to be known as Tansboro. Even with all of the industry, Winslow was mainly a farming town until the mid-1960’s when the Atlantic City expressway added a stop here. Since then, the population has quadrupled.
