Pennington, NJ is a small and unique community that still stands out as a moment in time. Originally named Queenstown in the 1600’s, it was a crossroads where travelers moving between New York and Philadelphia would stop overnight. The Presbyterian Church as built in 1708 and would later be used as barracks for British and Hessian soldiers during the Revolutionary War. In 1710, the name was changed to Penny Town and then again in 1747 to Pennington, which came from colonial governors from the Pennington family.
The history of Pennington is still reflected today in the architecture of many homes and buildings. Colonial, Federal, Greek Revival, and grand Victorian style homes are an old-home lover’s dream and their real estate prices are dramatically lower than those of surrounding towns. One of the most iconic structures is the Pennington Railroad Station. Erected in 1882, the Second Empire designed, stone building has been restored to become a private residence and it is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Pennington public school students attend the Hopewell Valley Regional School District, one of the most distinguished in NJ. The district was named to the College Board’s AP Honor Roll in 2011 and places in the top of New Jersey Monthly magazine’s “Top Public High School List.” The Hopewell Valley Central High School consistently ranks highly on multiple lists of America’s top schools.
In addition to their academic achievements, the school has been recognized for it’s high-caliber music and performing arts programs. Both the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) and the America Music Conference has listed the district’s music program as one of the best in the nation.
