Gloucester city was officially named in 1868, but the ports were used long before that. Known for the beaver pelt trade, the Dutch settled here and called it Fort Nassau in the 1620’s. They shared the land and hunting with the Susquehannock and Lenape people. It was a well-known spot in what was then called New Netherland on the Delaware river.
This pier was the site for the port of Philadelphia immigration station many years ago. Federal officials, trying to relieve overcrowding at Ellis Island, sought out larger facilities in Philadelphia and elsewhere. In 1910, William Thompson, known as “Duke of Gloucester,” sold his property to the government and Gloucester City become home to a new station. For the next thirty-six years, Thompson’s mansion was used as a stopover for immigrants coming to Philadelphia. Many people from around the world entered the United States through this station and settled in destinations all over the country. Many people stayed, in the year 2000 Gloucester city was noted to have one of the largest populations of Irish Americans in the country.
Two years after the station closed, George Hutchinson, Sr., and sons William Hutchinson, Sr. and George Hutchinson, Jr. founded the Hutchinson family business with that American dream spirit we all share. Hutchinson is dedicated to providing “Expertly Better” heating and air conditioning services to the residents of this hard working town where heritage keeps this port city thriving. To this day, we provide the best HVAC service in the NJ area.
Some music historians make the claim that Gloucester City is the birthplace of Rock & Roll in the early 50’s! Haley and the Comets started as the house band at the local pub ‘Twin Bar’. During the year and a half that they played there they evolved their country style to a whole new style of rock & roll. They changed their name too, it was Bill Haley and the Saddlemen.
Another interesting tidbit about Gloucester City is that in 1773, right here in the city, at a tavern, a man named John Ross got married. He married a Quaker girl named Betsy. She went on to make our country’s flag. You can cross the river to Philadelphia and still see their home, named for her, “Betsy Ross House”. We are proud to do business in Gloucester City and remembering our heritage.
