Gibbstown, NJ is a small historic community within Greenwich Township. With a population of just under 4,000, this 1.6 square mile community is under a thirty-minute commute to both Camden, NJ and Philadelphia, PA.
Like much of the region, the area is rich with history that originates with the Lenni-Lenape people being the first inhabitants, legend says they lived here for thousands of years. In 1677, John Cook purchased 1,111 acres from the tribe and constructed a home with a mill on his property. The mill, along with others in the area, was responsible for the feed and flour supplied to the Continental Army while it was encamped in Morristown, NJ during the Revolutionary War.
Other early families were immigrants from England, Scotland, Ireland, Germany, Netherlands, and Whales. One notable resident was General William “Scotch Willie” Maxwell. Maxwell was born in Ireland but lived in Greenwich Township for the vast majority of his life. In October of 1776, he was promoted to the title of Brigadier General and later led the First New Jersey Regiment during the Revolutionary War.
Gibbstown borders the Greenwich Lake Park, which attracts nature lovers from around the area. The park offers a variety of aquatic activities such as boating, kayaking, and year-round fishing. The 40-acre lake is stocked with trout twice a season, by the NJ Department of Fish and Game. In addition to water activities, the family-friendly park offers picnic areas and two miles of trails through the wetlands.
