Feasterville aka Trevose is a Philadelphia suburb just twenty-six miles north of the bustling city, but this hamlet offers residents a much quieter, quaint, suburban lifestyle. The community encompasses a section of Lower Southampton and has a population of approximately 6,500 people.
The Lenni Lenape Indian tribe, also called Delawares, were the original occupants of the land. Purchased by William Penn on June 23, 1683, Penn created four townships, Makefield, Falls, Bristol, and Bensalem. Additional townships like Southampton were formed in 1703.
The English were the first to settle in the area, soon followed by the Dutch that had originally resided in the New York area. Roads being developed in the early 1700s led to both a substantial population growth and added ethnic and religious diversity. By 1784, the township had nearly six hundred residents. Throughout the 1700’s and 1800s, the economy of the township was primarily agriculture, although there were several stores, a sawmill, flour mills, and a blacksmith shop.
Locals like Oliver an Joseph Hart played important roles in the Revolutionary War as part of the Continental Army, while William Van Horn served as chaplain. John Davis served in the War of 1812 and rose to the rank of General in the Bucks County militia. He was later elected to Congress in 1838.
Over the last half-decade, the area has begun to transform into a completely developed suburb. The area has developed several shopping centers, custom stores, and local eateries. Feasterville-Trevose is also conveniently located to other area attractions. The Neshaminy and Oxford Valley malls are just minutes away. Nearby Giggleberry Mountain in Lahaska offers an indoor obstacle course and an antique carousel. For those looking for the excitement outside of the city, not only is the community minutes from Philadelphia, but it is only seventy-five miles from Downtown New York City.
