Like much of the New Jersey area, the land in Clayton was originally inhabited by the Lenape Indian tribe. In 1730, Felix Fisler and his family immigrated from Switzerland to this area now known as Swedesboro; his son Jacob would later purchase 2,800 acres of land in what is present-day Clayton. After Jacob returned from serving in the Revolutionary War, he and his son Leonard expanded their land with a purchase of an additional 3,755 acres and started growing the community.
Largely because of the opening of a glass company, the population grew to thirty-six families in what was known in 1812 as Fisler Town. The town underwent a name change in 1850 to Fislerville and the later in 1862 to Clayton. By the later half of the 19th century, Clayton was considered to be one of the most affluent towns in NJ.
The Glassboro Wildlife Management Area, located in Clayton, is one of the town’s top attractions. The park consists of 2,337 acres of swampy forests with streams and ponds for fishing. Because of the dense trees and brush, it is also a top spot for bird watchers. Visitors can also find miles of walking paths through the woods and along the stream.
The city is served by the Clayton Public Schools which have a desirable student-teacher ratio of 12.6-1. In both 2009 and 2014, voters approved referendums that covered nearly thirty million dollars in renovations to all three schools, which included a new auditorium, technology infrastructure and new football field stadium lighting. Clayton High School was named by the US News & World Report as one of the “Best High Schools” in NJ for the 2012-2013 school year.
