Bethel Township is a suburb located along the southern border of Delaware County and sits just twenty miles south of Center City Philadelphia. The name Bethel is shortened from “Bethel Lyberty,” a Palestinian phrase meaning “House of God.” The area is known regionally as “Garnet Valley” because of the garnet mines that were operated here until 1912.
Earliest mentions of the township date back to 1683 when Edward Beazer and Edward Brown had five hundred acres surveyed to them. The area homed some of PA’s earliest settlers and like much of the region, many were Quakers looking for religious liberty. Bethel was originally established as the smallest township in Chester County, but shifted over to Delaware County’s borders on September 26,1789.
In 1759, British General John Forbes demanded that residents of Bethel pay a “bounty” of ten pounds in addition to a wagon of supplies and oats, to support his army as they marched to Fort Duquesne. In 1777, the British Army passed through town again, as they continued to pursue the Continental Army. The British plundered the village, leaving many entirely without food. Bethel bounced back and celebrated when the same army lost the war.
Today, Bethel is a highly regarded family community with low crime and top-notch schools. Students are serviced by the Garnet Valley School District, which serves Bethel, Chester Heights, and Concord Township. Despite being a newer district, founded in 1959, it is one of the leading districts academically and athletically. Garnet Valley High School student’s SAT scores routinely outperform state and national averages and the school has a student performance rating of 99.1, making it the top school in Delaware County, eleventh in the state and in the top 1% of the nation.
