The Merging of Two Family Traditions in the Heating, Air Conditioning & Plumbing Industry.
It’s not often when a company is in operation for 85 years, but it’s even more infrequent when two companies; with long and rich history become one. Well, that’s exactly what happened in Sea Isle City, New Jersey seventeen years ago when Hutchinson Plumbing Heating Cooling and Barth Plumbing became one.
George H. Hutchinson and sons, William A. Hutchinson, Sr. and George H. Hutchinson Jr. founded the Hutchinson family business in 1948. George and his sons started Hutchinson Engineering with their accumulated wealth – $35 in cigar box – with a “never say no” customer focus in rural Haddonfield, New Jersey. They believed then as they do now in pursuing greatness every day by offering the highest level of service, unsurpassed accessibility and greater value to their plumbing, heating, air conditioning and energy services customers.
Today Hutchinson continues as a thriving family business serving central and southern New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware. Hutchinson is committed to ongoing staff training, industry leading certifications and our technicians are on call 24/7 to repair your AC, heating and plumbing promptly and professionally.
The BARTH Plumbing story started in the mid-1920s when Howard, Sr. and his brother, Harry, formed a plumbing and heating business and hardware store in the Philadelphia area. In 1929 everything was lost when the stock market crashed, so Howard decided to relocate to the Jersey Shore. His mother, Lizzy, owned and operated a seafood restaurant at 86th Street on the bay in Townsend’s Inlet. This seemed like a good place to start again, so in 1932 Howard, Sr. began his plumbing business out of the back of his truck using a bunk house as his shop.
In 1941 with the war calling, most of BARTH’s employees left to serve in World War II. After peace was restored around the world, BARTH continued to grow; the only thing getting in BARTH’s way was Mother Nature. In 1944, 1950 and 1962, major storms devastated the Jersey Shore causing destruction everywhere. BARTH was not spared; vehicles, equipment and materials were damaged or all together lost. As always, BARTH not only survived, but flourished. In 1966, Howard’s oldest son, Howard joined BARTH Plumbing after serving in the United States Air Force. Within a few years Howard completely took over the operations of the company. In 1974 he constructed a building on 42nd Street and Central Avenue in Sea Isle City and moved the business to this location where it continues to operate. Over the next few decades, the towns of Sea Isle City, Ocean City, Avalon, Stone Harbor, Wildwood and Cape May County experienced unprecedented growth and so did the business. Because of its reputation, loyal customer base and quality employees, BARTH Plumbing caught the attention of a suitor. In 2000, Barth became part of the Hutchinson Family of Companies.
Serving homeowners and businesses in 7 southern New Jersey counties, parts of southeastern Pennsylvania, and Delaware, Hutchinson is the area’s largest Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning Company. With 52 years in the business Hutchinson Plumbing Heating Cooling joined Howard and the dedicated Barth Plumbing team to continue expertly supplying the products and services customers came to expect from these two firms. The Hutchinson family is no stranger to Sea Isle City; they have been vacationing there since the early 1950s. When the opportunity arose to become part of the business community and work with fine employees and loyal customers it was a dream come true. We plan on serving all of you for another 85 years, creating many more shore memories. Because of you, our valued customers make all this possible.
