Estell Manor, NJ is a small rural community incorporated in 1925 from parts of Weymouth Township. Described as “Small city charm in the pines” by locals, the stunning woodland area offers quaint homes with picturesque views of the Pinelands and the Tuckahoe River. The village was known for bog iron, cranberries, and lumber. The local sawmill was a key supplier of wood for ships and buildings in the surrounding area during the 19th century.
Estell Manor is home to the Head of the River Church. Built in 1792 it is Atlantic County’s oldest house of worship and the oldest Methodist church in NJ. There are at least two Revolutionary War soldiers, Jeremiah Smith and William Smith, buried on the grounds here in Estell Manor. The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Although there are no longer weekly sermons held on the premises, the church is open for special events and holds an annual Christmas Service.
Estell Manor joins fifty-five other South Jersey communities belonging to the New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve. As one of the nation’s first reserves, it consists of 1,100,100 acres of unique ecology that has been classified as a United States Biosphere Reserve. The location has five hundred eighty native species of plants, fifty-four of which are threatened and endangered. It is also home to nearly three hundred species of birds, over ninety species of fish and many reptile and mammal species.
Estell Manor Park is the most popular park in the Atlantic County Park System. It is bordered by the Great Egg Harbor River and the South River. During World War I the area was home to a munitions plant. Since its World War I day, the forest has reclaimed the area and is now home to a diverse population of plants and animals. Estell Manor Park is a great location for camping, boating, hunting, and trails. There are various sports fields located within the park and it is also the home of the Warren E. Fox Nature Center.
